Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United ‘scared’ as £15m deal rejected
Newcastle United and their Premier League allies will be ‘scared’ at the thought of allowing behind-the-scenes media access.
That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Netflix’s latest proposal to the Premier League.
As reported by The Times on Thursday (30 March), Premier League clubs have rejected a bid by Netflix to produce a series focusing on England’s top flight.
Netflix’s proposal was worth £15million across three seasons, with the money set to be spread among the 20 Premier League clubs.
Newcastle confirmed via their club website on 24 March that they are set to be the focus of a four-part Amazon Prime documentary.
But Premier League clubs have opted against allowing Netflix’s cameras behind the scenes, and Maguire believes it’s because clubs won’t want to share their day-to-day methods with their closest rivals.
“The Premier League these days is a very sophisticated beast and many clubs have methods they’d prefer not to share,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“You can understand why some if not many clubs would be reluctant to share information and access with Netflix.
“Some of the bespoke methods used to recruit players could be given away and distributed to rivals.

“The additional revenue generated by a Netflix documentary when split between 20 clubs, simply isn’t worth the risk.
“Most Premier League clubs will be scared at the thought of giving away their crown jewels to their closest competitors.“
