Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United want to ‘shape the future of football’ as new PIF plan revealed

Newcastle United want to “shape the future of football” with a seat at the very top table of club governance.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ plans to rise up in the ranks of the European Club Association.

The ECA represents 245 elite teams across the continent and has become a powerful lobbying group in matters of interest to their member clubs.

Newcastle are currently have Associated Member status, but a source told Football Insider on Wednesday (4 January) that they now want to apply for Ordinary Membership.

This would give the Saudi Public Investment Fund-owned side a vote on ECA policy and allow club representatives to stand for election to the organisation’s board.

Maguire explained why the Tynesiders are so keen to “have their voice heard at the highest level.”

Newcastle’s owners will want to shape the future of the game with a share in the direction of European football going forwards,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

They hope to be on the European stage on a regular basis following the takeover and the very impressive form they have shown this season.

“If they can maintain that form, they could begin the process of establishing themselves in Europe as soon as next season.

Therefore, achieving Ordinary Member status is a logical step forward. It is not over-costly and anything they can do to improve their strategic footing will be key.

Crucially, by having a vote, you have your voice heard at the highest level.
