Kieran Maguire: Premier League ‘extremely nervous’ as £277m Liverpool risk spelt out
Liverpool could see a change to their £277 broadcast income if the Premier League change their domestic TV provider.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the Premier League’s broadcasting options.
It has been reported by The Mirror (8 April) that the Premier League are ready to ditch Sky Sports and BT Sport to instead show top-flight matches on their own platform.
The Premier League are expected to complete one more multi-partner deal before the Premier League takes charge to broadcast their own matches.
A broadcast reshuffle could have a huge impact on clubs’ broadcast income, with Liverpool earning £277million from broadcast partners during 2021-22 according to The Athletic.
Maguire believes the Premier League will be ‘extremely nervous’ about making radical changes and risking the quality of their product.
“The relationship between Sky and the Premier League and the professionalism between both parties has greatly contributed to the Premier League’s success,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“The Premier League would face a huge, steep learning curve if it tried to go it alone in terms of broadcasting.
“There’s a good chance that this is a bargaining chip from the Premier League to maximise and extract their revenue from broadcasting.

“However, they would be extremely nervous if the quality of the product started to deteriorate.
“I see it more likely that the Premier League may hand themselves a few packages to learn the ropes before taking full control.“
