Kieran Maguire questions ‘bizarre’ John Henry request at Liverpool – ‘no doubt he’d kick up a fuss’
John Henry’s call for spending limits in the Premier League is “bizarre” and the Liverpool owner would “kick up a fuss” if it dragged the Merseyside club closer to midtable teams.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Henry’s appeal for Premier League sides to be capped on spending.
As reported by The Times last Tuesday (7 March), Henry insisted the Premier League should introduce spending caps “so that the league doesn’t go the way of European leagues where one or two clubs annually have little competition.”

The Liverpool owner added that his side will not pursue “unsustainable paths” to chase success.
The Reds invested £120million in new signings this season, including a potential £85million deal for Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez and £35million on Dutch forward Cody Gakpo.
Maguire believes Henry’s claims prove that Liverpool are aware that they cannot maintain the same levels of spending seen at rivals Manchester United and Manchester City.
“John Henry’s desire for spending limits does seem a little bizarre,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“He only appears to be looking up rather than down and looking at things on a much broader scale as far as the Premier League is concerned.
“If those spending limits meant that Liverpool ended up being closer to smaller clubs in terms of spending power then I have no doubt he’d kick up a fuss.

“I think his comments are indicative that it is difficult for Liverpool to maintain the same level of player expenditure that we’ve seen at Man City or Man United.
“You have to be careful at the same time that Premier League clubs don’t become disadvantaged when competing with other elite clubs in Europe.“
