Kieran Maguire reveals Aston Villa ‘danger’ as CEO drops behind-the-scenes news

Aston Villa would benefit from a behind-the-scenes documentary series but there is a ‘danger’ that such products could become saturated.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the broader benefits football clubs receive from behind-the-scenes documentaries.

As reported by The Times, Villa CEO Chris Heck revealed that the Birmingham-based club have recorded behind-the-scenes footage of their 2023-24 season.

Villa hope to sell the footage to a media platform in the form of a documentary series.

Premier League clubs such as Tottenham, Manchester City and Arsenal have all enjoyed documentary success through Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ series, while ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ via Disney has also thrived.

Maguire believes there are multiple benefits a club will receive from a documentary series, but insists that the market for sports series is quickly becoming saturated.

“There have been some spectacular successes when it comes to fly-on-the-wall football documentaries, especially with the likes of Welcome to Wrexham,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But we’re now in danger of diminishing returns if the market becomes saturated with similar products.

A documentary is likely to be broadly beneficial to Aston Villa if their current season is televised.

However, any expectations that it will have a significant financial benefit are misplaced.
