Kieran Maguire reveals Man City ‘envy’ as Uefa stamp down on £353m reveal

European clubs are pushing for a Uefa wage cap as they ‘envy’ the finances of Man City and the Premier League.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of new financial regulations in European football.

As reported by The Times, Uefa are planning a wage cap across Europe to run alongside their new financial sustainability rules.

The regulations will limit clubs’ spending to a percentage of their overall revenue, but there are worries that this could emphasise the financial dominance of the Premier League.

Man City currently have a wage bill of around £353million as of their 2021/22 finances,, which ranked them behind rivals Liverpool and Man United in England, who have wage bills of £368million and £385million respectively.

Maguire believes Uefa are being pressured into implementing changes, but revealed that the wage bill of Man City is already smaller than the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Uefa are under a lot of pressure from member clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They are worried that their European success may come to an end because of the financial success of the Premier League.

This is partly a function of Italian and Spanish clubs who used to be so dominant in Europe thinking they didn’t have to do anything else.

The Premier League has overtaken them in terms of international popularity and even distribution.

“There is a degree of envy from other European nations towards the Premier League, and having a hard wage cap is one way of addressing that issue.

But having said that, Man City only have the third-highest wage bill in the Premier League, and it is dwarfed by some of the Spanish clubs and PSG.”
