Kieran Maguire reveals what FSG really think of Liverpool stadium delay

The delay to Anfield’s expansion is not a ‘serious blow’ for Liverpool but it will be a ‘frustration’ for FSG.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how Anfield delays will impact Liverpool’s matchday revenue.

Liverpool’s Anfield Road stand faces further delays after the contractors responsible for construction – The Buckingham Group – filed for administration.

Workers were recorded leaving the work site after being informed of the news, and construction is now expected to face further delays.

The Merseyside club were initially hopeful of having the new stand open for the start of the 2023/24 season, but they released a statement prior to the season starting to reveal a new deadline of October.

The Reds were forced to start their Premier League campaign with a reduced capacity of 51,000.

Maguire explains that FSG won’t have included matchday revenue projections in their budget until the expansion was completed.

The Buckingham Group going into administration is a frustration for Liverpool rather than a serious blow,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“It’s going to delay the expansion for a few months but the most important thing is that all of the relevant safety checks take place so that fans can come to cheer on their team.

Liverpool

I suspect, knowing FSG, that they will have been cautious in terms of their budgets.

They won’t have factored in any additional revenues in their projections until they were absolutely certain that they were guaranteed matches could take place at Anfield with increased attendance.
