Kieran Maguire shares £11m Aston Villa reveal after record-breaking announcement
Aston Villa are streets behind their Premier League rivals when it comes to matchday income.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Villa announced “record-breaking” season ticket renewals on 4th June.
The window for renewals opened on Wednesday and Villa fans more than doubled the daily sales record.
In a conversation with Football Insider about Rangers on 30th May, Maguire explained that selling season tickets is not the most financially efficient pursuit.
And the spreadsheet expert claims that Villa remain well behind their rivals when it comes to matchday income.
“In 2020, matchday was under 10 per cent of their total revenue,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“I appreciate there were a few adjustments because of Covid towards the end of the season but I don’t see it changing significantly.
“I think the challenge for Villa is you’ve got to look at potential growth for any club. If you take a look at Villa’s matchday income for 2020, that was £11m, Spurs £95m, Man United £90m, Arsenal £79m and Liverpool £71m.
“All of these clubs were impacted by Covid. Season tickets sales are great but they don’t increase the amount of money. They just impact the timing of the receipt of those monies.
“We are seeing more and more clubs move towards a monthly direct debit system. So you’re not even getting the money upfront.
“You used to go and buy your season ticket in April or May and that money was used to pay the players over the summer.”
