Kieran Maguire shares £28m Newcastle United claim as new plan revealed
It is ‘absolutely essential’ for Newcastle United to grow their matchday revenue to comply with Uefa’s financial rules.
That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Newcastle’s plans to expand St James’ Park.
As per The Times (June 23), Newcastle are exploring the possibility of expanding the East Stand at St James’ Park to increase the stadium’s 52,300 capacity.
The Tyneside club are also plotting a new fan zone at the stadium, with Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales pledging that work will soon begin on the design and production.
Uefa’s new financial sustainability regulations are set to cap a club’s spending on player and coach wages, transfers, and agent fees to 70 per cent of club revenue from 2025/26 onwards.
Maguire believes that Newcastle will focus on increasing hospitality prices to help grow the club’s matchday income and comply with Uefa rules.
“Newcastle generated £28m from matchday ticket sales in 2021/22,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“This is a pretty good figure by the standards of Premier League clubs referred to as ‘the other 14’.
“But Newcastle will be aware that the likes of Man United, Spurs and Arsenal generate over £100million per season in terms of matchday revenue.
“Liverpool are also on track to reach those figures.
“Under the new Uefa financial sustainability rules, it is absolutely essential to grow revenue streams.

“Therefore, I not only expect to see an expanded capacity at St James’ Park, but there will be an emphasis on higher ticket prices for hospitality tickets.
“It will make the club more competitive and ensure they are in compliance with the new variance of financial limitations coming their way.“
