Kieran Maguire shares Man City ‘suspicion’ after source’s ban update

Man City and their Premier League allies will soon apply ‘pressure’ to remove the 3pm broadcast blackout in England.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the growing campaign to eradicate the 3pm broadcasting blackout in the top flight of English football.

Man City’s Premier League clash with Leeds United is set to be televised next Saturday despite being moved and rescheduled to the 3pm slot so as not to clash with the coronation of King Charles III.

Choosing to broadcast the game is set to break the 3pm blackout rules which have been in place in the UK since the 1960s.

Football Insider sources revealed that the rescheduling of the match is not indicative of a wider plan to remove the embargo.

Maguire believes the embargo will eventually be lifted, starting with the EFL and ending in the Premier League once teams push to monetise their own streaming rights.

The 3pm blackout has both positive and negative issues associated with it,” Maguire told Football Insider.

One of its perks is that it is giving people an incentive to watch live football, especially at grassroots level while the alternative option of watching a Premier League match is not available.

At the same time, we have moved to a 24/7 society and therefore if you are supporting a non-league club it is likely to be done out of affection.

Fans of non-league clubs don’t see that their club is fishing in the same likes of Man City – I suspect in the long-term that we will initially see the blackout removed in the EFL

There will then be pressure from top clubs like City in the Premier League to remove it, especially if clubs are allowed to sell their own streaming rights to their fans.
