Kieran Maguire shares Man City verdict after £400m+ twist

Man City are more than capable of keeping their wage bill inside any spending cap proposed by the Premier League.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the impact of a potential spending cap on City.

As reported by The Times, Premier League clubs are considering introducing a spending cap that limits wage bills to the amount of television money paid to the lowest-placed club.

The proposal would implement a cap that is proportionate to the broadcasting revenue of the 20th-placed side in the top flight, although the exact ratio is yet to be determined.

Premier League documents showed that Norwich City earned over £100million in broadcast revenue for finishing bottom in 2021/22, while City’s wage bill in that season was £353million.

Maguire believes that even if the spending cap was four times that figure (£400m+), City would be capable of fitting their wage bill within the limit.

I don’t see any proposed cap being a major issue for Man City,” Maguire told Football Insider.

Even if the cap is set at four times the Premier League TV revenue of the lowest-placed club, then that is something they are more than capable of dealing with.

It has been noted that despite all of the bonuses they have paid out for winning all of these trophies in recent years, City still only have the third-largest wage bill in the Premier League.

However, I do expect that to change in the 2023/24 season after City’s treble success this season.
