Kieran Maguire shares view on Nottingham Forest being relegated – ‘Catastrophe’
Relegation would not be a financial ‘catastrophe’ for Nottingham Forest this season if they are handed a points deduction.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the financial impact if Forest are relegated this season.
The Nottingham-based side were charged with breaching the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules after publishing their 2022-23 accounts.
Following Everton’s 10-point deduction for the same breach earlier this season, Forest are now at risk of a points deduction of their own.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently sit 16th in the table – just four points above the relegation spots.
As per the new Premier League fast-track regulations, Forest’s financial breach is set to be settled before the end of the season.
Maguire insists that Forest would cope financially with relegation due to the support of owner Evangelos Marinakis.
“Given the benevolence of Marinakis, Forest being relegated this season would not be a catastrophe from a financial perspective,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“That is assuming that he continues to underwrite the club’s losses.
“They would be entitled to three years of parachute payments compared to the two years had they come down in the first season following promotion.

“It’s likely that players have significant pay cut clauses embedded into their contracts.
“While it would be a rocky road, we’ve seen with Leicester, Southampton and Leeds that being relegated doesn’t necessarily stop you from being competitive at the top of the division.“
