Kieran Maguire suggests ‘£150m’ Chelsea boost as Stamford Bridge plan revealed

Chelsea could pocket £150million per season in matchday revenue if they build a new stadium.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the pros and cons of Chelsea’s new stadium plans.

As reported by the Daily Mail last Saturday (18 March), Chelsea are considering building a new ‘state of the art’ £2bn stadium capable of holding 60,000 fans.

Chelsea hope the new stadium could be built by 2030, and plans include the Blues spending four years playing away from Stamford Bridge.

It has been reported that Todd Boehly has informally approached Fulham owner Shahid Khan about using Craven Cottage during the construction process.

Maguire believes matchday revenue will be essential for Premier League clubs when Uefa ramp up their financial sustainability rules which will cap wages based on revenue generated.

If Chelsea do spend £2billion on a new stadium then realistically they can expect revenues in the region of £120-150million per year for matchday income and events,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Therefore, we’re likely looking at a payback period somewhere in the region of 15-18 years.

That is a fairly long period of time, but Chelsea have to consider that if they fail to keep up with other big clubs then they will start each season with a £30-40million shortfall compared to their competitors.

Matchday revenues are going to be essential in the new financial and sustainability rules which will cap wages based on revenues generated.
