Kieran Maguire swipes at Aston Villa chief Purslow as ‘Spurs fan’ Crouch hits back

Kieran Maguire has hit back at Christian Purslow after the Aston Villa chief claimed proposals in Tracey Crouch’s Fan led Review would “kill the golden goose”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the football finance expert suggested Purslow, 57, has not read the full contents of the 162 page report.

Villa chief executive Purslow told Radio 4’s Today programme last month that proposals in the Fan led Review could “kill the golden goose” of the Premier League.

As quoted by the BBC on Tuesday (7 December), Crouch firmly rejected the claim at a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee hearing.

She insisted that the recommendations put forward in the review are for the “long-term sustainability” of all divisions.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the latest, Maguire said: “I’m team Crouch on this one.

“Tracey Crouch is a Spurs fan. She wants a successful Premier League.

“If you read the 162 pages it is very clear that the people behind the report acknowledge that the Premier League is the main driver of success. The recommendations in the Fan led Review are still aiming to deliver a successful Premier League.

“The rest of English football needs a Premier League which is generating interest and big broadcasting figures. I do not think the people behind it would be that naive as to put forward a distribution model which was going to hamper the ability of ambitious clubs to generate money and to spend that money.

“Looking at the report in depth, there is no evidence that Christian Purslow’s comments have any validity. I think he’s just read a couple of the headlines.

“It appears to be part of a much broader approach taken by the Premier League clubs to sneer at the contents of the report. Purslow, Angus Kinnear, Karren Brady and Steve Parrish are trying to claim that we are moving to some form of communist utopia in football. The report does not suggest that at all.”
