Kieran Maguire tips Man City to smash £350m-plus Premier League record
Man City could break the Premier League wage bill record after winning the treble this season.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about City’s imminent wage rise due to bonuses.
City completed a historic treble this season, capping off the feat with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a wage bill of £354million in the 2021/22 season, but contract bonuses and guaranteed wage rises from winning three competitions this season are set to cause that figure to soar in City’s next financial accounts.
Man United currently hold the wage bill record after paying their squad £384million in 2021/22, but Maguire believes City could top that figure.
“With the upcoming changes to the Champions League format from 2024/25, City can expect to add another £30million onto their revenue,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“So that’s an extra £20million to spend as far as the wage bill is concerned.
“I would expect Manchester City to soon break the record for Premier League wage bill.
“There’s scope for that to grow even further.
“We’ve seen that the Premier League are very keen to have its members participate in lucrative pre-season tours to enhance the links that the Premier League has, especially with the US market.
“So while I wouldn’t say the sky is the limit, there’s certainly scope for significant wage bill increase.
“Wages have increased by 3400 per cent since the start of the Premier League and revenues have always driven wages.“
