Kieran Maguire: Todd Boehly is ‘lovestruck’ as new Chelsea deal announced today

Todd Boehly is ‘lovestruck’ by Brighton but the latest deal for Sam Jewell will not solve the transfer issues at Chelsea.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Boehly will not be able to emulate Brighton’s off-pitch success without club chairman Tony Bloom.

Brighton announced on Tuesday (20 February) that head of recruitment Jewell has accepted a new position at Chelsea and has commenced a period of gardening leave.

It marks the latest of many deals between the two clubs since Boehly’s takeover, including moves for manager Graham Potter and a record-breaking £115million transfer for Moises Caicedo.

Jewell is set to officially join the Londoners in a senior role in November after his gardening leave.

Boehly savaged as Chelsea poach Brighton chief

Maguire believes Boehly cannot replicate Brighton’s success by hiring their staff as club chairman Tony Bloom is critical to their strategy.

Todd Boehly appears to be somewhat lovestruck by Brighton & Hove Albion,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

He’s taken their manager, their assistant, their head of goalkeeping, their head of recruitment and he’s come back for three or four of their players.

“Sam Jewell is now on his radar and it’s because he is very good at his job.

However, I think what Todd Boehly doesn’t understand is that only Tony Bloom has the whole picture of the Brighton jigsaw – staff members are pieces of that jigsaw.

Chelsea

While Sam Jewell might have an idea of the transfer targets at Brighton over the next window, he’s probably not got anything longer-term than that.

It seems Chelsea will have to box clever in the upcoming transfer window anyway because of their significant spending in the last 18 months.
