Kieran Maguire urges Arsenal to match Chelsea after £200m development
Arsenal should invest in their academy in order to continue their current level of spending in the transfer window.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the sustainability of Arsenal’s spending for future transfer windows.
The Gunners have spent big this summer, recruiting Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya for Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The four new signings have cost Arsenal £200million this summer, adding to Arsenal’s £165million spend in the 2022/23 campaign.
Maguire believes the North London side will eventually have to increase the amount received from player sales and believes academy investment similar to Chelsea and Man City will help them achieve that goal.
“I think Arsenal have a one to two-year window in which they can spend significantly and not have to have players going out the door at the same degree of speed,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“But as we’ve seen with Chelsea over the course of 2023, they have been moving players out of the club.
“From the perspective of player sales, Arsenal will be okay this summer – I think they do have some sellable assets which will attract interest.
“I think what they’ve got to do now is replicate the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, both of whom are absolutely superb at recruiting players into their academy.
“A small fraction of those will go on to play first-team football, and the majority will be used as sellable inventory.

“It’s a horrible word to use about young men and their professional careers, but in the brutal world of football and money, that’s how they’re seen.
“They’ve got an excellent academy so they need to start utilising that and they need to monetise that in future years.“
