Kieran Maguire verdict on Man City being slapped with new charges amid Abu Dhabi accusation
Man City will likely avoid facing any new charges despite Javier Tebas accusing clubs of receiving ‘state aid’.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the impact of Tebas’ accusations on City and their Abu Dhabi ownership.
La Liga president Tebas lodged a complaint to the European Commission this week towards Paris Saint-Germain, claiming their state funding had ‘seriously distorted’ the market.
Should those complaints result in any sanctions or punishment, ‘state aid’ complaints could next be aimed towards Newcastle United and City, who have strong links to Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi respectively.
The new EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation will be responsible for carrying out any investigations into PSG or state-funded sides.
Maguire expects City to avoid any charges, with Abu Dhabi investing ‘close to zero’ in Pep Guardiola’s side in recent seasons.
“I think Man City will be fairly relaxed regarding Javier Tebas’ allegation towards PSG receiving financial support,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“City have received close to zero from Abu Dhabi over the course of the last five or six years.

“Therefore on a statute of limitations basis I think they’re unlikely to face any charges against them.
“There is a further issue which is that it is uncertain whether Tebas is trying to use this as a distraction tactic for domestic issues which are at the forefront of anyone connected to Spanish football at present.“
