Kieran Maguire: Wolves in points deduction talks as bombshell Premier League news drops

Wolves were one of the clubs mentioned in ‘discussions’ over financial breaches as their sale of Matheus Nunes didn’t count towards 2022/23 accounts.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Wolves avoiding any financial breaches.

As revealed by Football Insider on Thursday (11 January), Wolves were ‘dangerously close’ to breaching profit and sustainability rules and facing a points deduction.

Wolves

Club chairman Jeff Shi published a letter to fans back in August, explaining that they “must pay even closer attention to FFP and manage it well.”

They have been forced to sell players in recent transfer windows, including the £53million sale of Matheus Nunes to Manchester City in the summer.

However, Maguire explained that Wolves were involved in FFP discussions as Nunes’ fee could not be counted towards their 2022/23 figures.

In regards to Wolves, they were discussed in the groups of people who are interested in football finance and to monitor the income and expenditure and therefore profitability of Premier League clubs,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Wolves weren’t able to be saved by the sale of Matheus Nunes because the deal with Man City was completed after the cut-off date.

“It’s similar to Brennan Johnson’s sale at Nottingham Forest, which they could use to try and defend their breaches.

Man City

That would set a precedent for sales taking place after the cut-off date to be included in the accounts of the previous year.

Everybody is awaiting the white smoke or otherwise from the Premier League.
