Attacker could return: Klopp delivers injury update on key trio ahead of Merseyside derby
By Emma Sanders
Jurgen Klopp has given a fitness update on Daniel Sturridge, Emre Can and Joel Matip ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday evening.
James Pearce, reporter for the Liverpool Echo posted quotes from the manager on Twitter.
Matip is a doubt to feature after his injury was described as “painful” by Klopp and he will face a late fitness test ahead of the important Premier League fixture.
Can is expected to return to the side with Klopp stating he was in a “pretty good way” and if he completes training on Friday or Saturday he “will be included.”
Can was replaced by Giorginio Wijnaldum for the comfortable 3-0 victory against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening and if the German is fit, it will likely be another straight swap.
Daniel Sturridge is a “maybe” after reaching the final stages of his recovery from injury but it’s unlikely he will start against Everton given his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
He could be named in the squad though, with Klopp stating “he’s closer” and “it’s possible” that he will feature.
Divock Origi has scored five goals in his last five fixtures in the centre-forward role so Sturridge is not guaranteed a starting role even if he is fully fit.
The England international has also been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks so he will be keen to get back to action.
