“He’s prone to making big, bold outbursts”: Kris Boyd issues response to King criticism of Celtic

By Matt Farr

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has branded Dave King’s recent criticism of Celtic as “ludicrous”.

Celtic lifted their first domestic treble since 2000-01 last season, whilst completing the entire domestic campaign without defeat and finishing 39 points clear of Rangers in the league.

However, Rangers chairman Dave King has refused to give their Scottish rivals the credit they deserve, insisting that Celtic have won just two, not six, back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

King had claimed that the four titles won by Celtic while Rangers were competing outside of the top-flight did not count towards their impressive record, but ex-Gers man Boyd is having none of it.

Boyd told the Scottish Sun: “Dave King’s statement is the most ludicrous I’ve ever read. It doesn’t matter if Rangers have been in the league or not. Celtic have been champions and won six-in-a-row – end of story.

“You can’t rewrite history and bend the rules just because Rangers were not in the league for four years. It’s not their fault Rangers weren’t there to challenge them. For King to say anything else is just wrong.

“I cannot for the life of me work out where he gets this logic from. Then again it doesn’t surprise me with him because he’s prone to making big, bold outbursts at this time of year – when he’s looking to sell season tickets.”

Rangers were tasked with ending Celtic’s long-term dominance in Scottish competitions last term, despite having just returned to the top flight from their four-year absence.

They of course fell well short, but manager Pedro Caixinha will be expected to do better than his predecessor Mark Warburton next season and mount a genuine challenge on all three fronts.

Rangers were frequently bettered when the two sides went head-to-head last season, losing five of their six meetings in all competitions, including 5-1 defeats on both their first and final fixtures.

The best the Gers could muster was a 1-1 draw at Parkhead on March 12, but there is clearly little evidence to support King’s latest outburst.
