Kyle Walker ‘should have been punished’ as controversial footage re-analysed

Keith Hackett believes Ireland were denied a stonewall penalty against England after Kyle Walker’s “careless challenge” on Sammie Szmodics.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA and Premier League referee revealed he thought the Man City defender “knew what he was doing.”

The 34-year-old right-back appeared to clip Szmodics in the first half, but as he went down to the floor as part of the motion the entire situation was waved off.

The situation occurred when the game was 0-0 in the first half and could have been a pivotal moment had the decision gone the other way, which Hackett believes it should have.

Ultimately, it would be England who were awarded a game-changing penalty in the second half after Jude Bellingham was fouled by Liam Scales inside the box.

Harry Kane opened the scoring as England went on to win 5-0, but Hackett told Football Insider that Ireland were victims of a “harsh” red card in that instance as well.

Ireland should have won a penalty after Kyle Walker’s ‘careless’ challenge

Hackett told Football Insider, “Clearly, Walker went down and knew what he was doing.

Ireland

“Ireland were unfortunate because, in Walker diving for the ball, it’s a careless challenge on the Irish player to bring him to the ground.

“For me, he’s lucky – that should have been a penalty kick.”
