Kylian Mbappe sends message to ‘exceptional player’ after surprise news

Kylian Mbappe sent a message to Antoine Griezmann following his retirement from international football on Monday (September 30).

The 33-year-old Frenchman announced he would be stepping down from international duty with 137 caps, 44 goals, and a World Cup to his name.

Griezmann is France’s fourth most-capped player, ahead of the likes of Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, and current manager Didier Deschamps.

Atletico Madrid’s record goalscorer (184) will now be able to focus solely on his club after starting the season in fine form, scoring three goals and providing four assists across all competitions so far this season.

The two will potentially have to wait until next February before meeting domestically after Mbappe missed the Madrid derby on Sunday (September 29) due to injury.

Real Madrid’s latest galactico was able to put club allegiances to one side and pay tribute to his former France teammate on Instagram.

Both clubs are in Champions League action on Wednesday (October 2) after they got to winning starts against German clubs RB Leipzig and Stuttgart respectively.

Only Real face English opposition in the Champions League’s new league phase, facing Arne Slot’s Liverpool on November 27th.
