Lascelles tipped to be stripped of Newcastle captaincy after confirmed news – pundit

Danny Mills has suggested Jamaal Lascelles may be stripped of the Newcastle United captaincy.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed new signing Kieran Trippier may be handed the captain’s armband by Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United confirmed today (7 January) the arrival of the England full-back from Atletico Madrid on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

He has become the first signing of the new ownership and is reunited with Howe who signed him for Burnley in 2011.

“Let’s be honest, a huge part is the financial package,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Trippier is a very good signing, he’s a good player. Can he be the difference? He may well get the captaincy as an international player and a leader. He’s played incredibly well for England and out in Spain.

“But one right-back is not going to change their season around. They’re going to need three or four more players.

“There will still be players looking at it and thinking ‘There’s still a good chance of going down, do I want to play in the Championship next season?’ That’s going to be the hardest thing to attract players.

“Trippier has thought he’s 31 and on a two-and-a-half-year deal so that takes him to 34. If they go down he’s got a season to get back up and a season in the Premier League then it ends. It’s not really a project.

“You are going there for the money at this stage. It’s a bit of a gamble, if you stay up brilliant but if you don’t then you’re going to have to contend with playing in the Championship.”
