Kevin Thomson reveals what Walter Smith said to Rangers mole

Former Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson has revealed Walter Smith once threatened a mole within the Rangers dressing room that they would never play for the club again if he found out their identity.

Thomson relayed the story after reports claimed that Kenny Miller had leaked details of a post-match debrief following last weekend’s Old Firm defeat to Celtic to the Daily Record.

The veteran striker was dropped for Friday night’s trip to Hamilton and his Rangers future is now in serious doubt only months after being handed a new Ibrox contract.

Thomson told how Rangers’ starting XI was leaked prior to a European tie and then-manager Smith was furious, summoning the players to a meeting to read them the riot act before threatening to end the Ibrox career of the player responsible.

The former Hibs and Middlesborough midfielder also admitted the reports surrounding Miller were “out of character” for his former team-mate but feels, if true, Caixinha has to take action.

“We had a scenario when I was at Rangers under Walter Smith where our European team was leaked out and I still remember Walter having us all upstairs and calling us all out,” Thomson said on BT Sport on Friday night in a video shared on their official Twitter account.

“He did say if he found out who it was it would be the last time they’d play for the club and I’m pretty sure Walter would carry that through.

“It’s really out of character for Kenny, he’s a terrific professional, a great player and a great lad but if it is him then the manager has to act.”

Thomson was one of Walter Smith’s first signing when he returned to Ibrox for a second spell as manager after Paul Le Guen’s disastrous reign.

The midfielder made 109 appearances over three-and-a-half seasons at Ibrox and lifted three Scottish titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup in a trophy-laden stint before joining Middlesborough.
