Newly promoted club eyes deal for Aston Villa 19-year-old – report
By Matt Bullin
Newly promoted League Two club Forest Green Rovers are interested in Aston Villa ace Matija Sarkic, according to a report.
Gloucestershire Live claim Rovers are keen on signing the 19-year-old goalkeeper on a season-long loan.
Sarkic enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2016-17 as he began to train regularly with the first team at Villa, and he featured as a substitute on a number of occasions.
He also played nine Premier League 2 games for the Under-23s outfit, and he managed to keep four clean sheets.
The 19-year-old arrived at Villa Park in the summer of 2015 from Belgian club Anderlecht, and he became the club’s third choice shot-stopper last term.
Sarkic is under contract with the Birmingham-based giants until 2020, after he signed a contract extension in April of this year.
He has been capped on 12 occasions by Montenegro Under-19s, and he has captained the side three times.
Football Insider Verdict
Should this move come to fruition it looks like a win-win situation. Sarkic has never played senior football for an extended period of time, a chance that he could possibly have at Rovers. Playing regular, men’s football is always important to a youngster’s development, and there is no doubt that he would return to Villa a better player than when he left – if he does complete the switch. Meanwhile, the newly promoted League Two club would have the highly-rated 19-year-old’s services for a season, and he could prove crucial in their attempts to retain their Football League status after their first promotion from the non-league in their history.
