‘League Two standard’, Never again’ – Liverpool fans tear into Joe Gomez after display in 2-0 win against Sheffield United

Liverpool fans tore into Joe Gomez for his performance in their 2-0 Premier League win against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

The versatile defender, 26, was named in the starting XI ahead of Kostas Tsimikas and played the whole 90 minutes in the less familiar left-back role.

On an evening when Liverpool showed only fleeting glimpses of their most fluent football against a United team playing their first match of Chris Wilder’s second reign as manager, Gomez was a key figure in the defence.

He was busy with his main defensive duties but his frequently sloppy passing led to many Liverpool attacks breaking down and also allowed the home side to counter attack.

Fine goals from Virgil van Dijk and late on from Dominik Szoboszlai secured the three points for the visitors to keep them second in the Premier League table and only two points behind leaders Arsenal.

It was the 18th appearance for the season for Gomez, who has now started six Premier League matches as well as three in the Europa League and one in the League Cup.

His matches have been split across centre-back, right-back and left-back, and his start at Sheffield United was his third in the Premier League in that position following appearances against Luton Town and as a sub against Everton.

But many fans were less than impressed with the England international and made that clear on social media.

In other news, Liverpool are planning to offer a “shock” new contract to star may expect to leave.
