Leeds employee excited by what he’s heard from Sam Greenwood

Noel Whelan has insisted it is “no surprise” to hear “high praise” from Jesse Marsch about Leeds United youngster Sam Greenwood after his exciting cameo against Watford on Saturday (9 April).

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 20-year-old is improving “game-by-game” and is “out to impress” for the Elland Road club.

Greenwood came off the bench with 23 minutes remaining against Watford to provide the assist for Jack Harrison’s goal and carve out the opening for Rodrigo’s strike as Leeds United won 3-0.

As per SofaScore, the youngster notched two key passes, won seven of his eight ground duels, and won three tackles during his cameo.

Speaking post-match and quoted by Leeds Live, Marsch claimed Greenwood has “adapted the best” to his methods after his appointment in February.

Whelan suggested the former Arsenal youngster could thrive in a “number 10 role” for Leeds United.

“He has improved year-on-year, and also game-by-game during this season,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He can adapt and play anywhere across that front three. I think that’s how you have to coach strikers these days.

“It’s not just about being a one-dimensional striker. Greenwood and Gelhardt are being coached in a way that makes them useful all the way across that front three.

“But for Greenwood, he likes to drift into that number 10 role. I think that’s probably where he will get the most joy.

“He’s got the intelligence to get in between the lines and find a killer pass, he’s got a good turn of pace, and he’s got a real eye for goal as well.

“It’s no surprise that Jesse Marsch is giving him high praise. He’s full of enthusiasm and he’s out to impress.”
