Leeds employee tips Sam Greenwood for key role after what he’s heard

Sam Greenwood is in line for “a lot more game time” at Leeds United after “winning over” Jesse Marsch, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 20-year-old for “rising to the challenge” since the American’s arrival.

Greenwood played a key role during the 3-0 win against Watford (9 April), carving out the opening for Leeds United’s second and third goals during a 23-minute cameo.

Speaking post-match and quoted by Leeds Live, Marsch claimed the former Arsenal youngster has “adapted the best” to his methods after his appointment in February.

Speaking on the official Leeds United podcast, Greenwood was similarly glowing about the American.

He claimed the new style suits him “down to the ground” – and insisted he “loves showing pressing and aggression off the ball.”

Whelan hinted at an increased role for the young striker after a series of substitute appearances.

“Jesse Marsch has spent a lot of time looking at these youngsters since coming in,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s looking at these under-23s and giving them that senior action. I think Sam Greenwood is one of those players.

“He’s got pace, intelligence, he likes to drift into that number 10 role. I think there’s going to be a lot more game time for him in the coming weeks.

“He’s really risen to the challenge since the new manager has arrived. He is working hard to win the manager over, and that’s what you’ve got to do. He’s gone about it the right way.”
