Leeds fans react hilariously to Berardi role in late brawl at Huddersfield

By Alex Stevens

Leeds fans reacted hilariously on Twitter after Gaetano Berardi was one of the many players involved in the late brawl in the team’s defeat at Huddersfield.

A dramatic 89th minute winner from Michael Hefele handed Huddersfield a huge three points over promotion rivals Leeds.

German Hefele tapped home from Aaron Mooy’s deflected ball to spark wild celebrations at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Managers David Wagner and Garry Monk were both sent off in the following melee as the bosses squared up to each other on the touchline.

Players and coaches from both sides waded in as a series of shoving matches ensued, with full-back Berardi a notable aggressor as the Sky Sports matchday commentator described him as behaving like a “raging bull”.

Leeds supporters are well used to Switzerland international Berardi losing his head and took to social media to post some amusing comments about his conduct.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The defender, who started at left-back for the ninth match out of 10 in place of the injured Charlie Taylor, provided another vivid demonstration of the no-holds-barred playing style that is well known to Elland Road regulars.

Berardi joined Leeds in the summer of 2014 from Sampdoria and has spent most of his time at the Yorkshire club at right-back.

Luke Ayling has taken a strong hold of that position since arriving from Bristol City last August but Berardi remains a key member of manager Garry Monk’s squad.

The 28-year-old missed three months of the season with a hamstring injury but has taken advantage of Taylor’s achilles problem to force his way in to the team.

The clash against Huddersfield was his 14th appearance of the season.

Huddersfield led through Izzy Brown, who reacted first to a low drive on the counter after coming off the bench for the injured Kasey Palmer 25 minutes in.

But Leeds hit back thanks to Wood, who deftly took the ball around goalkeeper Danny Ward after Kyle Bartley had knocked back a high cross.

Huddersfield’s late winner means they climb above Leeds into fourth, and Monk’s side drop down one place to fifth.

In other Leeds news, there has been a finale in a major deal after a £7million bid was tabled.
