‘Could it happen’, ‘I’m happy’, ‘Mugged off’ – Leeds fans react after Taylor offered shock new contract

By Harry Sykes

Leeds United fans have reacted with surprise after the club revealed on Wednesday that contract rebel Charlie Taylor has been offered a new deal.

The Championship giants announced on their official website that the 23-year-old has been handed the opportunity to pen a contract that runs until 2019.

Leeds explained in a statement that “in line with EFL regulations, he now has one month from today’s date to accept”.

The offer is a shock given that Taylor controversially refused to play in the club’s final match of the season as he signalled his intention to quit this summer.

The left-back is out of contract next month and can find a new club, although he will not leave for free as Leeds are entitled to a substantial compensation fee for his development costs.

Fans of the Yorkshire giants took to social media in their droves to react the Taylor deal, with many sensing the unexpected possibility that the academy product could sign and extend his stay.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Taylor has been one of the mainstays of the Leeds side after becoming the latest graduate of the prolific academy to become a first-team regular.

He has made 104 senior appearances for the club and was voted their player of the year for the 2015-16 season.

In the latest Leeds United transfer news, rivals have stepped aside to give the Yorkshire giants a clear path to the summer signing of a £3million player of the year striker.
