Leeds fans react on Twitter to Reading play-off win over Fulham
By Matt Farr
Reading booked their place in the Championship play-off Final at Wembley with a win over Fulham on Tuesday – and Leeds fans are furious.
The Royals, who finished third in the league table, recorded a 2-1 aggregate win over fourth-placed Fulham to ensure safe passage to the Wembley final at the end of the month.
Yann Kermorgant provided the defining moment in the tie by firing past Marcus Bettinelli from the penalty spot, handing Reading a 1-0 second-leg victory.
However, Leeds fans, who are still reeling from their club’s own failure to qualify for the play-off semi-finals, took to Twitter to share their disgust that Reading were on the verge of a return to the Premier League.
But they also aimed significant discontent towards Fulham for their poor showing, having pulled-off a late surge at the business of end of the season to deny Leeds a spot in the play-offs.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
However, Leeds’ criticism of the two sides does come across as a rather desperate attempt to ease the pain of their own promotion heartbreak.
Leeds were well-positioned in the race for promotion only a matter of weeks ago, having fourth in the table on April 10.
However, a miserable run of form at the end of the season saw them pick up just one win from their last eight league games, which saw them drop out of the play-off race.
Instead, they were condemned to a seventh-place finish and yet another season in the Championship.
Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday face off in the second semi-final on Wednesday night, with the first-leg having finished in a goalless draw.
