Leeds owners and Red Bull are ‘really going for it’ as news confirmed – Borson

Leeds United’s owners are going to try and bring the club back to the top of the game as they look to redevelop Elland Road.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the stadium expansion must be at the centre of 49ers Enterprises and Red Bull’s plans for future growth and success.

Leeds confirmed in a statement on their website on 10 July Elland Road has been transferred back to the club after it was sold in 2004 following financial issues.

iNews reported in April the club are continuing their due diligence around a possible expansion of the stadium to more than 50,000.

Leeds United stadium plans must be at heart of future growth

But Borson warned any potential spending on Elland Road must be controlled after several clubs have surpassed their stadium development budgets in recent years.

He told Football Insider: “It’s important that the stadium is a focal point for the city.

“It needs a lot of redevelopment. It’s an underdeveloped site, so there is a lot of work to do there.

“But it has to be part of the whole development of the club under the ownership that it’s got.

“That combination of Red Bull and the Americans you would think are going to have a real go at bringing Leeds back to the top of the game.

“The stadium has got to be the centrepiece of any of these sorts of projects. The only question is how they pay for it all, particularly while they are not in the Premier League.

“Then how much they decide to spend on the development of the stadium. We have seen already a number of clubs that have overdone it in terms of the spending.

“It’s very important that they can control that spending.”
