Radrizzani fears revealed as clubs threaten revolt over Project Restart – Sources
Andrea Radrizzani is pushing hard behind the scenes for the Championship season to restart amid growing Leeds United fears of a club revolt, Football Insider understands.
The United owner is a strong advocate of completing the campaign before the next one starts as his club close in on the holy grail of promotion to the Premier League.
A Leeds source told Football Insider that Radrizzani and the Elland Road hierarchy are getting nervous at a rebellion from some clubs over plans to restart the season due to fears over player safety and opposition to the prospect of matches at neutral grounds.
United are said to be in a constant dialogue with the Football League, including its chairman Rick Parry,
The EFL will be involved in new talks this week with stakeholders including the Premier League and the FA about allowing matches to begin as early as 6 June.
A number of teams will argue that it is wrong to play at all while the country is in the grip of the coronavirus crisis, and that the sporting integrity of the competition could be undermined by teams losing home advantage.
The pressure on the Premier League and EFL has intensified in the last 24 hours after the France league followed Holland and Belgium’s lead by terminating its season.
Fifa’s medical chief has also stated his opposition to matches taking place while social distancing was still in force.
Radrizzani has made his position clear on his personal Twitter account by endorsing a journalist quoting La Liga president Jevas Tebas’ criticism of the termination of the French season.
English football has been suspended since March 13 but the Premier League and EFL aim to finish the season to protect TV money and the integrity of the competitions after being given encouragement by the Government.
Leeds and West Brom are well clear at the top of the Championship with nine matches remaining.
