Leeds star in thoughts of PL club amid uncertainty of 26-year-old’s future – reliable journalist

By Harvey Byrne

Leeds star Pontus Jansson is on the radar of Premier League club Southampton with their own key man Virgil van Dijk looking likely to leave this summer, according to a reliable journalist.

Sun reporter Alan Nixon claimed on his personal Twitter account on Sunday that the 26-year-old had always been in the thoughts of the Saints and could be a possible replacement for Van Dijk with Nixon stating “think he goes” in reference to the Dutchman.

Nixon was responding to a Southampton fan asking whether Van Dijk will depart St. Marys this summer and who would replace him on the south coast.

Nixon was then asked how much he believed that Jansson would cost if he was to leave Leeds to which he simply replied “lots.”

Southampton have had a long-term link with the Sweden international and in April Sky Sports reported that the Saints were preparing a summer swoop.

Now, with the money they could receive for Van Dijk, 26, they could certainly afford to make a move for Jansson, but it is likely to depend on whether the Dutchman stays or leaves before any more developments happen.

Football Insider verdict:

Jansson is integral to the success of the current Leeds team and must remain at Elland Road if the Yorkshire giants have any hopes of winning promotion. However, there is also reports that Southampton could receive a record fee for a defender if they do allow Van Dijk to leave and it would then just be a case of how much they are willing to pay for Jansson and how much Leeds are looking to hold out for. One thing that must not be forgotten however is that Southampton have a very extensive scouting department and it is surely not just Jansson’s name on their list of replacements for Van Dijk if they want to continue pushing into the top 10 of the Premier League.
