Leeds taking ‘big risk’ after Orta reveal via YEP – Phillips

Kevin Phillips “is surprised” Leeds United did not strengthen at left-back and central midfield in the transfer window just gone.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said the Whites are taking “a big risk” by not having specialist cover for Junior Firpo and Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds strengthened at left-back this summer with the signing of Junior Firpo from Barcelona.

However, Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas left upon the expiration of their contracts while Leif Davis joined Bournemouth on loan.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post (31st August), sporting director Victor Orta revealed he is comfortable with the depth of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.

He explained how the versatility of certain players means Leeds have adequate cover for all positions.

Phillips believes Leeds’ approach is dangerous.

“For me, it’s a big risk,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I always like to players playing in their specialised positions, especially left-backs. That is a specialist position for me.

“Ezgjan Alioski was the perfect example. He did well there but at times you could see he was not a natural left-back. Some sides will target you down that side because they know the player does not really know the position that well.

” I understand that you can get by with playing centre-backs in centre-midfield but you solve one problem and create another elsewhere when you do that.

“I’m surprised that they’ve left themselves short in a couple of areas.”
