Leeds told to sign Phillips rival after ‘surprise’ transfer update – pundit

Alan Hutton has urged Leeds United to sign at least another midfielder before the end of the transfer window.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he was “surprised” the Whites have not strengthened more this summer.

As quoted by the Athletic (19th August), Marcelo Bielsa admitted it was “not probable” Leeds would make any more signings.

The transfer window closes next Tuesday (31st August).

In terms of senior additions, Leeds have signed Junior Firpo from Barcelona and Kristoffer Klaesson from Valarenga.

They have also added the likes of Lewis Bate, Amari Miller and Sean McGurk to their under-23s.

Hutton admitted a lack of backup for Phillips could come back to bite Leeds.

He suggested there could still be a deal in the offing at Elland Road.

Asked if Leeds’ lack of business was a surprise, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It is a little bit, yeah. I’ve spoken about it with lots of teams, I don’t think you can stand still.

“When we see Phillips isn’t playing, I think they struggle. I think they need more people within the squad to enhance it, to make it better. They were fantastic last season. A breath of fresh air.

“They played a certain type of way and they didn’t veer off of that. You’re asking these players to do a lot of work, week in, week out. I think if you’re going to play that way, you need a big squad.

“You need to bring people in that fit that system and that philosophy. I’m a little bit surprised that they haven’t done more to add to that team.

“As I said, you’re asking these players to do a lot of work consistently which is very difficult.

“You know what it’s like, every team waits until the last week. They’ve had ages to do it.”
