Kenny fumes after ‘ridiculous’ attack on Leeds star Bamford

The criticism of Leeds United star Patrick Bamford after he made his England debut has been “ridiculous”.

So says ex-Leeds goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Bamford made his Three Lions bow against Andorra on 5 September.

The 28-year-old centre-forward started the World Cup qualifying match as England thumped the Group I minnows 4-0 at Wembley.

Some members of the commentariat were not impressed with Bamford’s performance after he was taken off with half an hour to play.

Speaking to talkSPORT on 6 September, Jamie O’Hara, slammed Gareth Southgate for “handing caps out like confetti” in reference to Bamford.

Harry Kane was the only Englishman to score more goals than Bamford in the Premier League last season.

The Leeds fan favourite has also netted one goal and supplied two assists in four matches so far this season.

And Kenny insists that the punditocracy needs to cut the Leeds star some slack given his undoubted talent.

“Some of the criticism is ridiculous, 100 per cent,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Give the lad a chance, for god’s sake. It’s his first cap and it’s a big occasion. He’s never been in that position before, it’s brand new to him.

“England weren’t that good in the first half anyway. And every time I’ve seen him play, I’ve always thought ‘Wow’.

“You just have to give him a better crack of the whip, give him time. Everyone is too quick to jump on people’s backs these days.”
