Leeds United backed to sign clinical striker amid ‘boom’ reveal – pundit

Leeds United will need to sign another striker in January as it may take Patrick Bamford “five months” to refind his best form, according to Kevin Campbell.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton forward also insisted Leeds also need to tighten up their defence after the 5-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday (3 September).

Joe Gelhardt started up top against Brentford with Bamford coming on for Jack Harrison at half-time.

Leeds failed publicly in their bid to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven on transfer deadline day last week (1 September) and ended up with Wilfried Gnonto from Zurich.

Andrea Radrizzani tweeted on deadline day that the club “will continue to work on Gakpo” ahead of the January window.

Leeds Live’s Beren Cross claimed on Tuesday (6 September) that a deal next year is unlucky as the Netherlands international’s price tag will “boom” following the World Cup.

“I still think Leeds are going to need another striker,” Campbell told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.

“It’s interesting the way they started the season. The game against Chelsea at hone where I thought they were fantastic and now you are starting to see they are a decent side, they give anyone a go.

“But little things are starting to creep in now, when you ship goals, that’s a cause for concern. They score a couple, but when you ship goals, that can’t happen, you’ve got to tighten up.

“Striker wise, Bamford is going to still be finding his feet, he’s been in and out for such a long time. It’s probably going to take him four or five months to get into his stride if he can keep fully fit.

“I think it’s something in January, Leeds might have to go again.”
