Leeds United board tipped to complete striker signing after Bamford claim – pundit

Alan Hutton has tipped the Leeds United board to “fix the wrongs” of the January transfer window by signing a new striker early in the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international insisted Patrick Bamford needs cover and competition ahead of next season.

As reported by the Athletic’s Phil Hay (22 May), Leeds are positioning themselves to sign a striker this summer after struggling without Bamford, 28, for most of the season.

Speaking on the Phil Hay show (23 May), the journalist went on to say the Whites are considering a move for “at least one Premier League centre-forward”.

Hutton insisted Leeds needed reinforcements in January, with not one new addition at Elland Road.

He suggested the Whites would fix that mistake “soon”.

“They had an opportunity in January to go and strengthen and they didn’t,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“They knew where they were lacking and where they were struggling but they chose not to, for whatever reason.

“Maybe they didn’t want to take a punt on in case they did go down, I don’t know. They’ve stayed up by the skin of their teeth so it’s an opportunity to fix those wrongs.

“Bringing in a striker, you know Bamford’s going to be fit for next season but he needs that competition. He needs somebody breathing down his neck and to lighten the load as well.

“I think that’s a situation they need to go and sort out as soon as possible.”

Bamford played just 10 times across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

He suffered a multitude of injury issues, including ankle, hamstring and plantar fascia problems.
