Leeds United defender could be axed after Patrick Bamford training reveal – Whelan
Noel Whelan has suggested Patrick Bamford will have to settle for a place on the Leeds United bench in Sunday’s season-defining clash with Brentford.
The former Leeds striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, tipped Jesse Marsch to keep faith with the majority of the starting XI who drew 1-1 with Brighton.
Speaking at his press conference on Friday (20 May), Marsch confirmed there are no fresh fitness worries ahead of Sunday’s game, with a decision to be made on Bamford’s availability.
The Whites boss revealed the striker has “looked really good” in training this week after his lengthy layoff.
However, Whelan suggested the only switch Marsch might make to his lineup is in defence.
“I can’t see too many changes,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Number one, we’re lacking in players. We’re going to need every bit of experience that we have available out there on the day.
“You know, if there’s any kind of change, it might be a centre half for a centre half. That is all I can see.
“Look, we’re strapped for players, we’re missing loads of experience, loads of key starters in the lineup.
“What happened the other day against Brighton, that sort of team lineup, is what we’re going to see. We’ve got nothing else, really, to turn to.
“I think what was out there was probably the best starting XI we could put out to be honest.”

Bamford last played for Leeds in the 3-2 win over Wolves in the middle of March.
He has only made 10 appearances across all competitions this season.
