Leeds United employee issues ‘exciting’ Jesse Marsch verdict after ‘project’ reveal
Noel Whelan has insisted he has seen enough from Jesse Marsch to suggest he can take Leeds United “somewhere special” if given the right tools.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 48-year-old for rectifying the Elland Road club’s leaky defence after the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa.
Marsch won five of his twelve matches in charge since succeeding Bielsa in late February – picking up 1.25 points per game as opposed to the Argentine, who managed just 0.88 PPG during the 2021/22 campaign.
Like his predeccesor, the American was forced to contend with a number of key injuries – including problems with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips, and Liam Cooper.
As quoted by Leeds Live (22 May), Marsch insisted his tenure this season has been a “Band-Aid project” and insisted there is “lots of work to be done” in order for Leeds United to reach their potential.
Whelan suggested he is “looking forward” to seeing a more front-foot approach from the former Red Bull Salzburg coach next season.
“We’re missing key players, first and foremost,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“Players like Bamford, Ayling, and James still have to come in.
“But saying that, I do believe we’ve seen enough from Jesse Marsch to suggest we can go somewhere special with him.
“The five-game unbeaten run, looking back, was very crucial and important for us in order to stay in the league.

“He [Marsch] knew where the problem was, came in and rectified it.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do to try and add a bit more attacking threat next season – it’s very exciting.”
