Leeds United employee makes claim after ‘aggressive’ Jesse Marsch reaction to confirmed news
Noel Whelan has insisted the new Premier League substitutes should be “perfect” for the likes of Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch.
The former Leed striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the rule changes would help keep players “fit and fresh” during what could prove a gruelling season.
As confirmed by the Premier League on Thursday (31 March), clubs will be able to use five substitutes next season.
Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Marsch revealed he is supportive of the changes and insisted it would allow him to remain “aggressive” in his tactics.
With the World Cup set to take place midway through the Premier League season, Whelan stated the rule changes are necessary.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Look at the players who are internationals and the amount in each team. The games come thick and fast from Euros to the World Cup.
“It makes sense to have five subs. I would have liked to have seen a cap. Yes, have five subs but one introduction from the under-23s that has to be on the bench.
“But, saying that, five subs make sense now because of the way the games have gone. The way Covid has struck players and their fitness levels.

“Also the way games are going from the Euros straight into Premier League. Then into the World Cup and back into the Premier League.
“I think it makes sense to keep these players as fresh and fit as possible. To be able to change when needed. I think right now, at this stage in people’s lives in football, I think it makes perfect sense.
