Leeds United employee thrilled by Rodrigo transformation after what he’s seen
Noel Whelan has hailed the Rodrigo transformation “everyone has been waiting for” after his goal-laden start to the new season at Leeds United.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the former Valencia man is “more involved” after a full pre-season under Jesse Marsch.
Rodrigo, 31, leads the Premier League scoring charts with three goals after his brace during the 2-2 draw against Southampton on Saturday (13 August).
The forward, who has two years remaining on his contract, also notched five goals in as many games during pre-season.
The Spain international managed just six goals and one assist in 34 games in the 2021-22 campaign.
He cost Leeds United a reported £26million fee in 2020 – a then club-record outlay.
Whelan insisted Rodrigo’s newfound confidence is allowing him to pick up better positions.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Goals breed confidence, especially in strikers.
“Everyone’s been waiting for this from him since the day he signed for Leeds United.
“He seems a lot more involved in games now – and I think he needs that and thrives from that.
“He’s a lot more confident and that allows him to better anticipate the right positions to pick up – and we saw that with the two goals against Southampton.

“Particularly the first one – it’s a lovely flick, but last season he may not have made that run.
“He’s got performances and goals going his way at the moment and that will help us get points on the board.”
