Leeds United fans will ‘love’ Joe Gelhardt development – pundit

Leeds United fans will be desperate to see Joe Gelhardt get a run in the side during the last throes of this season, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 19-year-old has been a “breath of fresh air” after his breakthrough this term.

Gelhardt, who has notched two goals and three assists in the Premier League this term, has impressed during his 544 minutes of action this term.

The former Wigan ace has been widely tipped to replace the injured Patrick Bamford up front for the remainder of this campaign.

However, speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday (7 April), manager Jesse Marsch revealed the youngster has missed most of the week’s training after picking up an injury playing for the under-23s.

Hutton urged Marsch to manage the England under-21 international sensibly as he looks to further his development.

“Fans love seeing that sort of energy and love for the game,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He runs himself into the ground. You’ve got to remember that he’s only 19.

“He’s still got a lot to learn, and he’ll get even better as he develops in the coming seasons.

“The fans will be so happy to see him get a real opportunity in the last stretch of this season, especially after what’s happened with Bamford.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air. But he’s so young – you just have to manage him well and avoid throwing him in at the deep end.”
