Sources: Leeds United open preliminary Jack Harrison talks after bid submitted

Leeds United are opening new contract talks with Jack Harrison as they try to prevent him leaving on a cut-price deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The wide forward has been the subject of interest from Newcastle United and they are still believed to be keen on him going into January.

Leeds do not want to lose Harrison, 26, and are set to offer him an extended deal to keep him beyond the summer of 2024.

Preliminary discussions have already begun on a new deal that would see the former Man City star land a pay hike.

Newcastle tried to sign Harrison during the summer and reportedly had £20million-plus bid rejected by Leeds.

The Whites are aware they will struggle to keep him if he enters the final 12 months of his contract at the end of the season and a new contract agreement is not in place.

The Premier League regard Harrison as a key member of their team and he started 12 of their 14 Premier League matches this season before the World Cup break.

One regular criticism of the left-footed star is his mediocre goal and assist return, with his haul this term just one goal and three assists.

However, he fares better on other metrics and, as per Fotmob, ranks 17th equal in the Premier League this season for chances created with 24.

Newcastle Man United

The winger has played 180 matches for Leeds since signing from Man City, initially on loan, in the summer of 2018, before the deal became permanent in 2021.

They have yielded 29 goals and 25 assists in all competitions.
