Leeds United issued stark warning after what ex-manager saw – ‘it’s very poor’

Alex McLeish has suggested Leeds United will be looking to change tact in the summer transfer window after their brush with relegation this season.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed Jesse Marsch for keeping the Whites in the top flight despite a number of key injuries plaguing his side.

Leeds United finished three points clear of relegated Burnley after a final day (22 May) victory away at Brentford.

Marsch and the Elland Road side secured survival in spite of a number of injuries, including to talismanic striker Patrick Bamford – who netted 17 league goals last season.

Leeds United chose not to act in the January transfer window despite a number of key absences – but have already dipped into the market to sign midfielder Brendan Aaronson this summer.

McLeish hailed the Whites youngsters who stepped in to help the Yorkshire side to safety.

He told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “They got away with it, didn’t they?

“They’ll be meeting up over this summer. They’ll want to find out if they could have avoided being so close to relegation by doing anything different in the transfer market.

“But what shone through was the energy that these youngsters gave them.

“For two or three years now, we’ve been watching a Leeds United side with incredible energy. With that comes injuries, muscle strains, and whatnot.

“They’ve been exciting, but very poor at times with some of the drubbings they’ve had.

“Jesse Marsch deserves huge credit for keeping them in the division with some of the injuries they had.”
