Leeds United news: Jesse Marsch handed ‘massive boost’ after journalist’s injury update – Whelan

The injury returns of Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips will be an “instant boost” for new Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the duo are “pivotal” to the success of the Elland Road club.

As per The Athletic’s Phil Hay (26 February), Bamford and Phillips could return for the visit of Aston Villa on 10 March.

Bamford has made just six Premier League appearances this season, while Phillips has been sidelined since December.

Leeds United confirmed the appointment of former RB Leipzig coach Marsch yesterday (28 February) after the departure of Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday (27 February).

Whelan suggested the duo could help the American lift the Whites out of relegation danger.

“This’ll be a massive and instant boost for Marsch,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But again, if we had these players available all season, I really do not believe we would be in this predicament.

“It’s really unfortunate that we’ve had these injuries and such an inconsistent line-up this season. We’ve been missing a number of key players for almost every game.

“But it would certainly be a massive boost for Marsch to have these players back, ready, and at his disposal. They’re pivotal to our success.

“There aren’t many players in England who can give the quality that Kalvin can provide in that midfield area. We all know how important Patrick is with his goals as well.”

Leeds United

Leeds United have conceded the most Premier League goals of any side this season (60) after leaking 20 in their last five games.

The Whites sit just two points outside the relegation zone.
