Leeds United news: Pundit issues Ralf Rangnick verdict after manager hunt update

Jesse Marsch would bring a “fresh set of eyes” which could help transform the faltering Leeds United defence, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited Ralf Rangnick’s appointment at Man United as he acknowledged an element of “risk” in Marsch’s potential arrival.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday (17 February) that the American is Leeds United’s first choice to replace Marcelo Bielsa this summer.

Bielsa’s latest one-year rolling contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Marsch is unattached having been sacked by RB Leipzig in December after six months in charge.

Hutton claimed Leeds United are in need of a manager who can “really organise” their rearguard.

“He’s had a good upbringing and a good background,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“Similarly, Ralf Rangnick was always presented as a professor of football on the tactical side of things. But they’ve put him in at Man United and it’s been far from perfect.

“Everything’s a risk, and this would be no different.

“I think with his background and the way he’d want to play, with that aggressive press, I think Leeds need something like that. They need a fresh set of eyes.

“They need someone to show that they’ve got the quality and really organise that defence. They’re conceding too many goals, and they need to rectify that.

“It’s kind of strange that they haven’t rectified that. If results don’t go the way they want and they slip into that relegation battle – we may see a change.”

Leeds United sit 15th in the Premier League after winning just two of their last 10 games.

Bielsa’s side have conceded the second-most league goals this term (50).
