Leeds United news: Pundit issues Raphinha claim after Hay reveal – ‘players are going to ask questions’

Kevin Campbell has suggested Leeds United winger Raphinha was fed up at the end of Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suspects Raphinha, 25, grew tired of Bielsa’s dogmatic approach at times.

Raphinha started Leeds United’s 3-0 loss to Aston Villa on Thursday.

The Whites have lost their last six Premier League fixtures, a run which brought an end to Bielsa’s time at Elland Road.

According to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay (5 March), there was “frustration” between the Argentine manager and Raphinha last month.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the update, Campbell said: “Managers will tell you players should never question you.

“But do you know what, sometimes it has to be done.

“When you are on the pitch, seeing the same thing happen week in, week out, you have got to question the manager. You have to say, ‘Hold on a minute. We are too open.’

“Bielsa probably did not want to hear that. He did not want to hear that at all. In response, he made Raphinha sit down.

“It did not work out for Bielsa in the end. He was a great manager for Leeds though. What he achieved there was remarkable. I think he deserved a bit better from the board.

“But Raphinha is a top player and when you are on the pitch watching goals go in week after week you think, ‘Hold on. Are we going to change something?’

“Maybe it was the way Raphinha approached it. Players are going to ask questions and challenge. That is the modern game now, in all honesty.”
